HP SmartStart CDs and DVDs have been used countless times since Compaq ProLiant days to accelerate and standardize server deployments by integrating the right HP drivers and utilities into the OS installation process. The market leader for some years with good reason, ProLiant technology represents a remarkably stable continuum of server hardware management tools.

I either need a kind soul to download the BIOS for me, or offer some advice on how to get around HP's paywall without forking out money for a support contract for a retired server I bought for peanuts off of eBay.HP ProLiant servers and blades are a mainstay in the data center. As far as I can tell, only this and the HP Service Pack is behind the paywall, and all other drivers and stuff are publicly accessible. I'd like to download the latest server BIOS for the ProLiant D元60 G6. and that's the part where I learnt that in 2014, HP decided to specifically put server firmware behind a paywall, requiring a support contract with HP to gain access to BIOS downloads. I have grand plans for the thing, involving a CPU upgrade, memory upgrades and possibly installing an additional SAS backplane for more storage, but before doing anything crazy, I figured the best thing to do would be to get all the necessary firmware up to date, including the server's BIOS. It's currently on its way, and hopefully should arrive by this Friday or Monday. It's the perfect balance of old enough that additional hardware is relatively cheap to come by, but recent enough to not be terrible in terms of performance, virtualisation support and not dimming the lights in the neighbourhood when powering the thing on. So I just recently got my hands on a cheap HP D元60 G6, and have already started investigating some cheap hardware upgrades for the thing. r/HomeNetworking - Simpler networking advice. r/pfsense - for all things pfsense ('nix firewall) Might be able to find things useful for a lab. r/hardwareswap - Used hardware, swap hardware. r/buildapcsales - For sales on building a PC r/linux - All flavors of Linux discussion & news - not for the faint of heart!
